Care­ful pilot­ing of cog­ni­tive assess­ment tasks before using them to study par­tic­i­pants is an essen­tial ele­ment of any project work­flow. Pilot­ing serves many func­tions, includ­ing con­firm­ing that instruc­tions are clear, ensur­ing that par­tic­i­pant under­stand­ing of the inter­face and data out­put are con­sis­tent, as well as pro­vid­ing impor­tant checks on a range of tech­ni­cal fac­tors. Here I will dis­cuss my expe­ri­ences of pilot­ing cog­ni­tive assess­ment tasks imple­ment­ed in Goril­la, includ­ing the addi­tion­al chal­lenges asso­ci­at­ed with work­ing with remote, online par­tic­i­pants and how I have mod­i­fied my approach to pilot­ing to address these issues.
